James (on the tongue)

3:3
When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11Can both fresh water and salt[a] water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

I am still working on this. Even in normal conversation I at times...most of the times...lol will go on in detail. God is working in me to not say everything that comes to my mind...even if it is not directly harmful...a long conversation can make people not want to come back for more...hmmm

with that...God bless,
Sheri

"Matthew 12:36 NIV But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.

I had to let God do a work in me to get past this sticky part of my life. For all of my life I had spoken careless words more than I spoke soft kind words. If you snapped at me more often than not I snapped at you. I cussed like a sailor...actually worse. But once I was born again, I automatically did not do this as much, and what was left in me, God went to work on. I am fallible so I will make mistakes still...but that is not my nature any longer.

The words we speak should be edifying.
Ephesians 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

And because of the above, and how hard it is to control the tongue, we should let our words be few.

Ecclesiastes 5:2 (New International Version)

2 Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few."
